What You Can Do

Contact the Premier. Don’t spend too much time on this because your comments will not actually reach him but will only counted and summarized by his staff and likely passed off to the Speaker who is officially responsible for the Library. However, it is important that his office knows what the public reaction is.

Contact the Members of the Legislative Assembly Members Services Committee. These are the people who will be making the final decision on the future of the Library. (Note that two of the members are government MLAs with offices in the East Annex who might reasonably expect to move into the library wing if it is converted to office space.)

Contact the Leader of the Opposition. She is in the best position to publicly ask awkward questions about the government’s plans for the library.

Contact your MLA. Use the Legislature website’s MLA Finder to locate and contact your MLA. It’s important for both government and opposition to know that this is not a Victoria issue but an issue that affects all British Columbians.

Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Politicians read newspapers, and so do voters, so this is a very effective tool for democratic change. Be sure to say something about yourself so our government will know that British Columbians from all walks of life are concerned about this.

Finally, spread the word! Blog about it. Tell your family, friends, neighbours, co-workers, and anyone who will listen! If they need more information, you know where to send them. 😉
